    How does vector tracing work?

    How does vector tracing work?

ith the tracing image in function Adobe Illustrator you can quickly convert your image, logo or photo into a vector file. Creating a vector file using this method has advantages and disadvantages.

    Benefits:

    • Quick
    • Multiple vector file extensions (EPS, Ai, PDF, SVG)
    • Easy to learn

    Cons:

    • Not perfect quality (never identical)
    • Monthly Cost of Adobe Illustrator
    • Little control over the end result

Would you rather have an identical vector file with perfect quality? Then you will have to trace it manually with the Pen Tool. You can also use our vector services

    Image tracing Illustrator

Image Trace can be used in Adobe Illustrator. Below is a step-by-step plan to vectorize your image with image tracing:

    1. Choose an image to convert to vector
    2. Select an Image Trace preset. You can choose from different presets like High Fidelty or Low Fidelty, play with different settings to get the best result.
    3. Vectorize the image with Image Trace.
    4. Refine your tracked image by making changes with different settings such as Color Mode.
    5. Save your image as vector. Export the file as .eps or .pdf vector file. You now have a eps vector file.

    Image tracing Photoshop

Vectorizing an image is possible in Photoshop, but certainly not recommended. Adobe Photoshop is intended for pixel files. Adobe Photoshop therefore does not have an Image Trace function.

    Image tracing Inkscape

Inkscape also has the function: trace image. Would you like to learn how to use Image Trace in Inkscape? Follow the steps below:

Step 1: Open PNG or JPG Image in Inkscape

Open image in Inkscape or drag an image into your Inkscape document. If you drag it into your document, you may see the following prompt (I used the default settings below):

create vector file in inkscape 1
Click on your image to select it.

Create vector file in inkscape 2

Step 2: Trace Bitmap (Path -> Trace Bitmap)

Next, mouse over Path in the top Inkscape toolbar and click Trace Bitmap.

create vector file in inkscape 3

This will open the following window. You want to use multiple scans, so click the Multiple Scans button and select Colors from the drop-down menu to keep the existing colors on the image in the new vector. You may need to increase the number of scans to cover all colors.

create vector file in inkscape 4

    Step 3: Complete the Vectorization

Once you click OK in the Trace Bitmap window, it will take some time for Inkscape vectorize your image. Once your image has been successfully vectorized, click the Edit paths on nodes icon (it looks like a cursor with dots in a circle, see the image below).

create vector file in inkscape 5

Now if you click on the image, you will see a number of dots around the image. With these dots you can change the shape of the newly created vector to whatever you want.
